Yellowknife Community Foundation Launches New Memorial Scholarship

The Yellowknife Community Foundation has announced the establishment of a special new memorial Fund.

Named for the late Ian Legaree, who served as a member of the Yellowknife Community Foundation over a period of more than thirty years, the Ian Legaree Youth Leadership Fund will serve as a scholarship fund designed to recognize and pass on Ian’s many contributions to youth development and sports in the NWT.

Ian was a long-time coach with the Yellowknife Polar Bear Swim Club, and also served as the officiant for many major events. Ian worked as the Director of Sports, Recreation and Youth for the GNWT from 1989 to 2020, and helped play a major role in the Arctic Winter Games, and the Youth Ambassadors participation at the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2010.

Laurie Gault, the Chair of the Yellowknife Community Foundation, shared her condolences on behalf of the organization.

“Ian’s passing has reverberated across the Yellowknife community, the North, and beyond. His passion for community building, and endless giving of his time and talents, will stand as an enduring testament to community spirit and inspiration to young and old alike. We are so grateful for Ian’s enthusiasm, leadership, and friendship, and our hearts are with his family.” –

Ian passed away on January 17th. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 17th at the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife. Donation cards will be present to help build up the Fund. Additionally, donations can be made at any time online by visiting the Yellowknife Community Foundation website.
