With less than two months to go until the doors to the castle are opened, two members of Snowking’s Royal Court shared some details on the 30th annual Winter Festival!
Two members of the castle’s construction crew, Freeze Frame and Snowpoke, discussed some of the things that locals can look forward to at this year’s Castle. While there are a few things that the castle wants to keep under wraps for now, the two were quite eager to discuss this year’s International Snowcarving Symposium.
Freeze Frame explained that they are “expanding that field to ten teams this year. I think four of them are international, around three or four of them are from other parts of Canada, and some local teams!
It’s a great, beautiful gallery of carvings. We start out by building boxes that are eight by eight by eight feet, and then the carvers come in. No power tools are allowed, it’s all done by hand, and the creativity that goes into them is astonishing.”
The Symposium officially begins on February 26th, just a few days before the castle itself is open to the public. Members of the public are more than welcome to come by and watch the carvers as they work, and will even be able to vote on what they think the best sculpture is. Once the Symposium is complete, the sculptures will remain on site for the rest of the Winter Festival.
The theme for this year’s Symposium is “Medieval,” so guests should expect to see carvings of knights, wizards, and other staples of Arthurian fables.
“It’s something that the carvers and the builders take on as what we call an “organic process.” The creativity that goes into that is really unpredictable, and that’s one of the most astonishing things about Snowking.”
The main castle is on schedule to open on March 1st, and will remain open throughout the rest of the month.
