Snowmobile Safety Advice

With the thick snow well here to stay for the season, many Northerners are enjoying their recreational time on snowmobiles, and the City of Yellowknife has shared a few things to keep in mind to help stay safe.

First, as with all other motor vehicles, snowmobiles have speed limits that must be followed at all times. Drivers are advised to operate their vehicles at a manageable speed that will allow them to come to a safe stop.

While driving within city limits, snowmobile drivers must acquire valid registration and insurance.

It is mandatory for drivers to wear helmets when operating their snowmobiles, and proper winter clothing should be worn as well.

When out on trails, snowmobile drivers should keep an eye out for any others who might be out and about. This includes hikers, skiers, dogsleds, and other snowmobiles. If anyone plans on taking their snowmobiles away from the city, it is advised that they inform their friends and family of where they are going in the event of an accident.
