Winners Declared for YK Shop Local Campaign

Yellowknife’s Shop Local Holiday Initiative has found its winners!

Every year for the holidays, the City of Yellowknife launches ShopYK, a campaign to encourage locals to do their shopping at businesses run by YK-based owners.

The initiative ran from November 12th to December 12th and saw thirty-two different businesses that opted to participate. This year’s campaign saw a total of 1,283 submissions sent in by city residents, and $212,191 spent at local businesses. Participating shoppers were randomly selected to win prizes in gift cards to the participating businesses, and on December 13th, the three grand prizes were awarded.

The top three prizes were $2,000, $1,000, and $500 all in gift cards to chosen businesses. The first place prize went to Matthew and Christine S., Second place went to Debra A., and third place went to John M.

Thank you to everyone who participated by shopping local and celebrating the unique offerings our city has to share.”

Canadian census to take nation’s family portrait

“It's as important as elections. It's our nation's family portrait we're taking every five years. We collect demographic and socioeconomic information on the Canadian population. What makes the census unique is we have data at a very low level of geography. Every community is represented in the census. Most of the other data sources are at more aggregated levels, at higher geographic levels. It’s at the community level,” Mathieu explains.
