Aklavik RCMP Donate 120 Winter Jackets to Local Children

Aklavik RCMP were recently able to complete a clothing donation that had been set up over a year earlier.

In December of 2023, Aklavik RCMP Cst. Jason Emmons found that a considerable number of children within the community did not own proper clothing for the cold winter air. Working with his wife, Larissa, Cst. Emmons contacted Columbia Sportswear to arrange a delivery of winter clothes to the community.

Columbia Sportswear teamed up with Toys for Tots to donate 92 winter jackets, sized for children between the ages of 1 to 12. However, a transportation issue delayed the shipment, and the RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa had to step in to help get the clothes from London, Ontario all the way to Aklavik. The delivery was made in April.

On October 7th, Cst. Emmons, Larissa, and Sgt. Michael Mignon arrived at the Moose Kerr School in Aklavik to finally deliver the jackets. Another complication arose, as many of the children at the school were either new to the area, or had outgrown the sizes that were available. A new round of jackets had to be ordered and delivered, bringing the total number of donated jackets to 120.
