Business Awards Gala Celebrates Northern Businesses

Yellowknife’s Explorer Hotel recently hosted the annual YK Chamber Business Awards Gala.

The event is put together by the YK Chamber of Commerce, and is used to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the many different businesses across the NWT.

Members of the NWT business community, along with their friends and family, enjoyed not just the accolades of the awards, but also a full buffet dinner, musical entertainment, and various raffles and 50/50 draws.

The ten award categories, and their winners, are:

Skilled Trades – NWT Pineworks LTD

Workplace Health and Safety – AVENS

Trailblazer Women in Business – Charlotte Henry

Outstanding Indigenous Business – Tlicho Investment Corporation

Community Impact – AVENS

Small Business of the Year – Tundra Transfer LTD

Large Business of the Year – Tlicho Investment Corporation

Employer of the Year – College Nordique Francophone

People’s Choice, Customer Service Award of Excellence – Cheeky Chops Pet Salon.

Update: Wildfire in Wood Buffalo has grown to more than 12,000 hectares

Wood Buffalo Firefighters and NWT Fire say a fire near the Whooping Crane Nesting Area in Wood Buffalo has grown to more than 12,000 hectares and is considered out of control. RCMP plan to collect data to better understand systemic racism in Yellowknife

Yellowknife RCMP said they plan to take part in a countrywide research initiative that examines racialized people’s experiences interacting with police. Police said the program would involve collecting data on interactions involving use of force, wellness checks and arrests of racialized persons.
