What should the ‘gateway to Yellowknife’ look like?

When you reach Yellowknife by car, what’s the first landmark you see?

For many people, the first item of any note is the Bristol Monument – the Bristol air freighter looming over the highway at the intersection with Old Airport Road.

Now, city officials want to know how that area could become a better first port of call for Yellowknife’s new arrivals and tourists.

A new city survey calls the monument “the major gateway to the city” and asks for input on ways to create “a more welcoming and attractive gateway for visitors”.

Options include setting up a new “destination point” beneath the monument, featuring a restaurant, stores, trail connections and a landscaped area. There’s also a chance to discuss how you would improve the Bristol Pit, which currently serves as a winter sports facility.

The survey’s broader focus is on ways to revamp the area around Frame Lake, as part of the city’s capital area development plan.

You can explore the options surrounding a new Frame Lake West subdivision and park, look at restoring the McNiven Beach area, and have your say on how Highway 4 approaching the downtown should change.

There’s even the opportunity to support a new long-distance skating trail on Frame Lake.
