Yellowknifers ask city council to preserve historic Robertson headframe

Yellowknife, NWT – It’s the first thing you see when you come into Yellowknife, and it’s the last thing you see when you leave.

That was the message from dozens of Yellowknifers at City Hall Tuesday afternoon as council discussed future plans for Con Mine’s Robertson headframe.

The iconic structure was expected to be torn down as part of the clean-up of the non-operational gold mine.

President Walt Humphries of the N.W.T Mining Heritage Society was among those lobbying to preserve the historic site.

“It’s not just in the past that mines made Yellowknife. If everyone who worked at Con, at Giant right now in the remediation and at the diamond mines left, what would remain? You’d have a few civil servants and street people. Mining is still the mainstay of this town and it pumps millions of dollars into the economy every year.”

Councillors have been debating whether to save the structure for months now.

Some councillors say they still need more information, meaning a final decision will be deferred even longer.
