The GNWT will be increasing the 2024-25 Senior Home Heating Subsidy in recognition of the cost of living.
Depending on the community that a senior is living in, this increase will provide an extra $85 to $175 per month from September of 2024 to April of 2025. Seniors who have already applied and been approved for the following year will not need to re-apply for the subsidy. Those who have not yet applied are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
Caitlin Cleveland, the Minister of Education Culture and Employment, said in a statement that “the GNWT is committed to supporting seniors and enabling them to live healthy and independent lives. With the rising cost of living, we recognize that inflation is putting economic pressure on households, including those of senior residents. The increase to the Senior Home Heating Subsidy rates for the 2024-2025 season will better support seniors in heating their homes this winter.”
The Senior Home Heating Subsidy provides financial assistance to low-to-modest income seniors to assist with the cost of heating their homes, though they are responsible for covering the remainder of their heating costs.
