GNWT Agrees to further commitment to Mackenzie Valley Highway

It was recently announced that further commitments have been made by the GNWT on the Mackenzie Valley Highway Project.

The Territorial Government is working with SSI on developing a new plan and seeking more funding for the project. The goal of this project is to have the MVH extended to all-season use at approximately 321 kilometres from the end of Highway 1 at Wrigley to Tulita and Norman Wells. The plan is currently undergoing environmental assessments by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board.

Caroline Wawzonek, the Minister of Infrastructure, said in a statement that “In the Northwest Territories, significant infrastructure projects are only feasible and effective with the support and collaboration of Indigenous governments and Indigenous organizations. The GNWT is grateful for its continued partnership with SSI for the Mackenzie Valley Highway project. Together, we will harness and exercise our combined strengths and shared interests to advance this project to foster positive outcomes for NWT residents and communities.”

As project planning continues, the GNWT and SSI will continue to work closely with
residents, businesses and organizations that have an interest in the MVH project.
