Black bear killed in Yellowknife neighbourhood Thursday

A lone black bear was shot and killed in a Yellowknife neighbourhood Thursday afternoon, according to a wildlife official with the GNWT.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources told Moose FM conservation officers were forced to kill the animal in the Range Lake area because of the threat it posed to public safety.

Witnesses told us officers were seen trying to track the bear down in the area behind the Shell gas station.

Officials say they were notified of the animal’s presence in the area around 3:00pm. A foot patrol and helicopter were used in the search for the bear. It was located and put down shortly after.
