Thirty environmental research projects receive $2.2 million

The Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (NWT CIMP) will provide $2.2 million to support thirty new or ongoing environmental monitoring and research projects across the NWT.

Out of the thirty funded projects; eight are new for 2024, fourteen are what is classified as mid-term, and eight are in their final year. Seven projects focus on traditional knowledge, twenty-one centre on scientific research, and two combine traditional knowledge and science. All projects address important priorities for monitoring the overall impact on caribou, water, and fish. The project results will provide resource managers, governments, and communities with valuable knowledge to help them make informed decisions.

Jay Macdonald, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, says, “By combining Indigenous, scientific and local knowledge, we make better decisions for our environment’s future.”

Funding goes to Indigenous governments and organizations, universities, and territorial and federal government departments. Recipients get $70,000 – $100,000 a year for three years.

Yellowknives Dene First Nation’s Spring Carnival is almost here

Organizers said the event revitalizes the community and fosters unity within Dettah and Ndilo, as well as in Yellowknife and surrounding regions. Hundreds of people from across the region attend each year to take part in traditional and northern activities.
