Majority of N.W.T communities at extreme risk for wildfires

Yellowknife, NWT – The combination of extended hot and dry weather and lightning are to blame for wildfires across the territory.

That’s according to Manager Mike Gravel of Forest Management Services with the G.N.W.T’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Gravel says as many as 60 have been reported in the territory so far this season.

We asked him how many communities are at an extreme risk for wildfires.

“Definitely over half of the N.W.T communities are at extreme warnings and then probably another quarter of the communities are at high so they’re probably a day away from being extreme themselves. Really, the majority of the N.W.T from Fort Smith to Fort Good Hope are experiencing extreme conditions.”

Gravel says people shouldn’t make fires unless absolutely necessary and ensure they are completely extinguished when done.

He says he expects fire weather conditions to remain either high or extreme for at least another week.
