Report: N.W.T has some of the highest rates of drinkers and smokers in Canada

Yellowknife, NWT – According to data recently released by Statistics Canada, the Northwest Territories has some of the highest rates of heavy drinkers and smokers in the country.

Last year, a third of N.W.T residents reported being heavy drinkers, which is the highest rate in Canada and nearly double the national average of 18.9%.

More than a third of N.W.T residents also reported being smokers; the second highest rate in the country behind only Nunavut where 59% of residents say they smoke daily or occasionally.

The national average is 19.3%.
