“We stepped away from this stuff as soon as we realized what we’d found.”
Hay River fire chief Ross Potter has been a little preoccupied with wildfires of late. So, when his team found a huge haul of crack cocaine beneath one of the department’s own buildings, it took him a moment or two to figure out what was going on.
“We found the drugs underneath the smokehouse at our fire training facility,” Potter told Moose FM on Friday.
“We found it while doing some maintenance to our trailer – some levelling, that type of thing – and we found the stuff tucked into a bunch of siding underneath the building.
“It didn’t make us feel too good – but the bright side is this is a whole bunch of stuff that’s not going to hit the street, which is an awesome thing.”
Earlier on Friday, police confirmed 1.5 kilograms of crack had been found and seized. RCMP in Hay River say they were notified on Thursday evening and say they have begun an investigation.
It’s not clear who may have stashed the crack cocaine underneath the building and there has been no suggestion of fire department involvement.
Reports suggest a kilo of crack can hold a street value of well over $100,000.
