The GNWT has announced the recipients of the 2023 Literacy Awards.
Having been created in 2002, the Literacy Awards help to showcase the literary achievements of both young students and adult learners, educators, and organizations and businesses who help to promote reading and writing skills in the North.
2023 saw a total of 12 recipients:
- Outstanding Educator: Staff at Joseph Burr Elementary School in Fort Smith
- Outstanding Support for Literacy Development NWT Business Award: DeBeers Canada
- Second Language Learner Award: Apprentices in the Mentor Apprentice Program (MAP)
- Annabelle Tetlichi – Dinjii Zhu Ginjik (Gwich’in)
- Cynthia Pavlovich – Dinjii Zhu Ginjik (Gwich’in)
- Dorothy Ruben – Dene Kǝdǝ
- Ida Lennie – Dene Kǝdǝ
- Lisa Zoe – Tłı̨chǫ
- Rena Chappel – Dene Kǝdǝ
- Violet Biscaye – Dëne Sųłıné
- Priscilla Canadien – Dene Zhatıé
- Supporting Literacy Through Technology Award: Violet Jumbo
- Outstanding Non-Profit Support for Literacy/Language Development: Tree of Peace Friendship Centre
Caitlin Cleveland, the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment who presented the awards, said in a statement that she was “honoured to recognize the recipients of this year’s Literacy Awards. From learning and practising their language, to providing books and literacy programs to schools and hospitals, to developing a language application and cookbook, these residents and organizations are showing how literacy has lasting impacts on their communities and beyond. Thank you for your valuable and inspiring contributions to literacy in the Northwest Territories.”
