Yellowknife RCMP are asking residents to be vigilant after a suspected case of drink-tampering over the weekend.
On Friday, police say someone reported becoming ill and unconscious after consuming a drink that was left unattended inside a local bar.
The Mounties suspect the victim ingested gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), otherwise known as the date-rape drug.
“The individual attended the hospital the following day and was advised that the symptomology was consistent with being administered a drug, such as GHB,” RCMP said in a statement.
In liquid form, GHB is odourless, colourless and tasteless making it easy to slip into someone’s drink without them noticing. It can also come in the form of a powder or capsules.
The effects of GHB are typically felt within 10 to 20 minutes following consumption but can last up to five hours.
“Be observant of your food and beverages in public. Should any person witness anyone tampering with another person’s food or drink, they should report it immediately.”
