The Dettah Ice Road has officially closed for another year.
This year was one of the shorter seasons for the road’s operation, with it not being open until January 29th, and closing on April 9th at 10:00am.
The opening of the road was greatly delayed by warmer than average weather, followed by January’s extreme cold snap. This made it much harder for any equipment to be out on the ice to prepare the road. Regional operations staff and crews were constantly working to actively monitor and maintain the road throughout its lifespan.
While the Department of Infrastructure normally sends out notice of the road’s closure at least 72 hours beforehand, March’s warm weather caused the toad to deteriorate much more rapidly then expected. With regular vehicle traffic, overflows, and runoffs, the road was becoming too soft and rutted, and was deemed Insafe for travel.
