Youth group looking to surpass 2023 donation totals in upcoming Relay for Life

The Relay for Life Youth is a community-led initiative launched by the Canadian Cancer Society to raise awareness about cancer, support cancer-related services, and fund research to bring hope and healing to those affected.

Last year, the Interact Club of École St. Patrick’s Secondary School, a youth group sponsored by the Rotary Club of Yellowknife, organized its first Relay for Life event. Over one hundred people participated and raised $17,000 in donations. The Interact Club provides young people with opportunities to serve their communities through service projects and leadership development.

This year’s event, led by grade 11 students Stella Fairman and Audrey Debagorski, is gearing up to host the event again, attract more participants, and achieve a higher fundraising target.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Relay for Life Youth Event 2023 brought together over 43,000 students from more than 201 schools across Canada, raising $6.7 million to support its mission.

The celebration for reaching the fundraising goal is scheduled for Friday, May 17, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“We have three ceremonies: opening, closing, and luminary. At the luminary … we reflect on the effect cancer has on people,” says Fairman.

During the event, there will be food, a track event, a teacher pie-in-the-face event, karaoke, and Just Dance—a video game series in which players follow on-screen dance moves to various songs. Stephen Richardson, Juno Award winner of the 2024 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award, presented by Anthem Entertainment, will provide music.
