23 dancers from Yellowknife are in New York City as part of this year’s Dance the Magic on Broadway.
The group will take part in a series of workshops before performing in a showcase at the New Amsterdam Theatre next Tuesday.
Nearly 400 dancers from all over the world made their way to the Big Apple for this year’s event.
Bella Dance Academy owner Lina Ball is with the dancers. She told Moose FM she expects the group to be more seasoned this time around after first taking part in the event two years ago.
“I’m really excited for this event just because we already have one under our belt,” she said.
“The experience of performing on Broadway for most people is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience if that.
“I think it’s amazing especially for our dancers who are more isolated and out of the competition world.”
Dancers will audition seven pieces of choreography before three are selected. Ball wants Yellowknife dancers to take as much as they can from the experience.
“This event is great because it shows them the rest of the world. It teaches them to be humble and that they always have more to learn.
“But it also teaches them that the only thing separating them from professional dancers is practice. It really opens their eyes to something much bigger than what we have in Yellowknife.”
In between workshops and rehearsals, the group will also visit the Empire State Building and go on a cruise.
Yellowknife dancers also traveled to Los Angeles for a separate event last year.
