City of Yellowknife Warns of Hole in Ice at Yellowknife Bay

The City of Yellowknife has sent out a small warning to residents about a hole in the ice near Old Town.

The City has been informed of the hole, which is located on Yellowknife Bay, between Joliffe Island and Old Town. While the last few days have seen temperatures drop greatly, this has still been a warmer than normal winter season. This can create unstable and unpredictable conditions for activities that take place out on the ice.

The City has provided tips for people to stay safe if they plan on heading out onto any frozen lake during the winter, especially if those activities involve heavy vehicles or machines.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Travel with a partner.
  • Carry dry clothing and an emergency kit.
  • If travelling in a group with vehicles, spread out when stopped to distribute the weight.
  • Carry a form of communication to call for help.
  • Stay off of rivers. Flowing water creates very thin layers of ice.
  • Share your travel plan so that others know where you are.
  • If you are unsure of how thick the ice is, drill a hole to test it.

Please call 9-1-1 or (867) 873-2222 if you see that someone has fallen through the ice or is in distress.
