True North FM and Vista Radio recognized at the Canadian Radio Awards

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories True North FM, the voice of Yellowknife and the North, has been awarded the “Best Community Service Initiative – Small Market” Award for the Yellowknife Wildfire Coverage with the Salvation Army and the Recover Together initiative at the Canadian Radio Awards. This accolade was announced on December 14, 2023, highlighting True North FM’s exceptional commitment to the community in times of crisis.

In the wake of the worst fire season in the modern history of the Northwest Territories during the summer of 2023, True North FM played a pivotal role in supporting the community. In addition to providing countless hours of on-air information and alerts, Vista Radio, the parent company of True North FM, launched a national fundraising initiative with the Salvation Army to provide relief to the evacuees. Once the immediate danger subsided and the people of the area returned, the station’s efforts went beyond broadcasting. True North FM offered radio and digital advertising campaigns free of charge to support local businesses and organizations as it was recognized this was crucial in maintaining community resilience and helping the business community rebuild.
