Estimated Ice Road Opening Dates

With ice thickness levels continuing to rise as we make our way through the winter season, we also approach the reopening of the various ice and winter roads throughout the Territories.

Most of the seasonal roadways will be opening up in mid to late December. The GNWT has a list of estimated days that the roads are expected to open based on twenty-year averages. It should be noted that the dates are estimates only, and the openings of the roads are subject to various factors, including temperature and weather conditions.

Colville Lake – December 20th

Deline – January 15th

Gameti – February 19th

Nahanni Butte – December 10th

Norman Wells to Fort Good Hope – December 20th

Sambaa K’e – December 20th

Tulita to Norman Wells – December 25th

Wekweeti – March 5th

Wrigley to Tulita – December 23rd

As for the two ice roads, Aklavik is expected to open on December 20th, while the Dettah Ice Road should be opening around December 24th.
