Threat against tenant prompts security review at Lynn’s Place

Lynn’s Place in Yellowknife is reviewing its security protocols after one of its tenants was threatened earlier this week.

On Tuesday morning, a woman was chased into the all-female safe housing facility by a man she’s had a relationship with in the past.

Once the woman gained entry to the building and the man was locked out, the man threw a rock through a window at the front of the complex. He fled the scene shortly afterwards.

According to the YWCA in Yellowknife, which oversees Lynn’s Place, this isn’t the first time the man has threatened her there either.

A couple weeks ago, the same man heaved a rock through the woman’s second floor window at the facility, which is intended to be a safe haven for women fleeing violent relationships.

Lyda Fuller, executive director of YWCA Yellowknife, told Moose FM police responded quickly. At the time of writing, it’s unclear if an arrest has been made though RCMP say they will continue to investigate.

“This is a good example of why we had the building built in the first place,” said Fuller.

“We want it to remain a safe housing option for women and this was a good wake-up call to what can happen.”

Fuller says steps have already been taken to prevent incidents like this from happening again.

“The City has offered to increase the amount of RCMP patrols around the building and we’re quite happy about that.

“This made us take a look at every possibility that could occur and make sure we’ve got adequate protections in place.

“I’m sure, over the next few months, we’ll find other things that we want to do to increase safety.”

Fuller says she isn’t aware of any other incidents like this happening since the facility opened last September.
