57th annual mining rescue competition takes place in Yellowknife

Yellowknife, NWT – The 57th annual mine rescue competition will take place Friday and Saturday.

It’s being put on by the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Chief Inspector of Mines Peter Banks with the W.S.C.C explains why the competition is so important.

“The competition is a method of evaluating the competence of the E.R.T teams at the mines. All of the mines are isolated posts so they do not have an ambulance service of a fire department to assist them in emergencies so the6y have to provide that themselves under the Mines Act.”

Banks says teams from four mines from the N.W.T and Yukon will compete over the weekend.

He says skill competitions include a written test, firefighting, underground obstacle, rope rescue and first aid among others.

Banks says the public is invited to take in some of the action on Saturday at the Yellowknife Community Arena between 9:30am and 3pm.
