After a challenging season of wildfires in the North, United Way NWT has has distributed over $1.8 million to non-profits, charities, community governments, First Nations governments, and Alberta evacuation centres throughout the 2023 wildfire season through the use of various grants.

Over 45% of grants awarded have supported South Slave evacuees and communities, with 27% supporting Yellowknife area evacuees and organizations, and 25% supporting additional parts of the North Slave region including Tłı̨chǫ communities and the Behchokǫ evacuation.

Between various donors, foundations, private individuals and small businesses, United Way NWT raised over $700,000 in September 2023 alone, with 100% of donations received from the public going directly to wildfire recovery. The United Way NWT has received just over $2.6 million in donations throughout this wildfire season, and disbursed almost 70% of these donations to initiatives supporting needs during evacuation and reentry. United Way NWT is looking to distribute the remaining 30% to projects and organizations working on wildfire recovery.

United Way NWT is still receiving requests for funding from community organizations and First Nations governments affected by wildfires at various stages this season.
