Prime Minister Trudeau announces $20.8 million affordable housing investment, 50 new homes coming to Yellowknife

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continued his NWT tour today and made an announcement regarding the status of housing in the Northwest Territories.

In a press conference held at Somba K’e Park in Yellowknife, the Prime Minister joined NWT MP Michael McLeod, Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty, GNWT Housing Minister Paulie Chinna, and Premier Caroline Cochrane, to announce a new affordable housing complex coming to Yellowknife.

“The cost of rent has been going up, vacancy rates are very low, and the people who are hardest hit by this lack of supply are vulnerable people, including seniors, Indigenous peoples, and those experiencing homelessness,” Prime Minister Trudeau says.

According to Minister Chinna, through a $20.8 million investment from the Government of Canada, a 50-unit housing complex will be constructed in Yellowknife with occupancy openings in 2025. The building is reported to include a mix of bachelor for individual tenants and seniors, and 2-bedroom apartments for small families.
