Yellowknifers organize sit-in after city removes benches downtown

Yellowknife, NWT – A sit-in was organized in front of the post office in downtown Yellowknife, after benches in front of the building were removed by the city.

Dozens of people made their way to the intersection over the lunch hour Wednesday, including many of the city’s less fortunate.

Summer Silke helped put the gathering together.

We asked her why.

“I saw on Facebook that the city removed the benches earlier this week so I decided to buy a couple chairs, cases of water and fruit and come out here.”

In a news release, 6133 NWT Ltd, who purchased the post office building in 2009, says the city removed their benches after concerns of harassment were verbalized by patrons and tenants during the past couple of years.

The company believes the property is a key meeting place in the city and look forward to continuing that tradition but not to the detriment and safety of children, youth, elders and members of Yellowknife.
