Police in the Northwest Territories say human remains have been discovered at a gravel quarry south-east of Hay River.
In a statement issued late on Tuesday, RCMP said the discovery had been made a day earlier at a quarry on Highway 5, between Hay River and Fort Smith.
Remains were found inside a vehicle submerged in a pond at the scene. It’s not clear what quantity of remains was uncovered, nor in what form.
“A cause of death has not been determined,” read the RCMP statement. “The identity of the deceased individual has not been confirmed as identification of the deceased may take an extended period.”
The investigation is ongoing and police say they will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.
