City cancels Welcome Home Gathering as air quality plummets in Yellowknife

Yellowknife got an orange surprise when they looked outside on the day of the City’s “Welcome Home Gathering.”

Air quality in Yellowknife has reached “11” presenting a very high health risk to residents of the city.

As a result, the City has chosen to cancel it’s Welcome Home Gathering scheduled for September 23.

“While it’s an unfortunate outcome, the safety of everyone is our primary concern,” the City says.

According to the City, the cancellation does not necessarily mean there will be no event in the future, and the City says to stay tuned for more information regarding a potential future event in the coming weeks.

The “Welcome Back Shop Local” contest will go on as planned, and residents can still submit photos of their receipts on the City’s website

Additionally, the Fieldhouse track and indoor playground are currently open for free until air quality improves.

Dr. Kandola recommends daycares, especially in older buildings test water

The GNWT's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Kami Kandola is recommending that day centres and day homes in the N.W.T. have their drinking water tested even though the testing of these facilities does not fall under the purview of the GNWT. One main reason for the recommendation,  has to do with the age of buildings along with the risk contaminants like lead and rayon can pose to children ages 6 and under, explained Dr. Kandola.
