NWT and NU Lotteries announces free parking day on Franklin Avenue next week

Parking will be free along Yellowknife’s Franklin Avenue next Wednesday as NWT and NU lotteries looks to welcome the community home after several weeks of evacuation.

The annual free parking event put on by the Northwest Territories and Nunavut lotteries is usually used by the organization to promote a lottery product and the lotteries’ sport and recreation funding in the north.

This year, the event will be used as a welcome home event for residents of Yellowknife after a long, hard end of summer due to wildfires.

“We do it every year normally as a promotion, but because it’s a difficult time for the community we chose not to tie any product into it,” NWT & NU Lotteries representative Richelle Castillo tells MyTrueNorthNow.

According to the lottery, green bags over parking meters will indicate which spots are available for free, and parking laws remain in effect during the event.
