Two RCMP officers assaulted during Yellowknife robbery, 17-year-old arrested and charged

Yesterday, Yellowknife RCMP responded to a robbery complaint at a downtown retail store on 49th street around 6:00pm.

According to police, officers were told a security guard approached a male youth who was attempting to shoplift from the store. When confronted, the youth pulled out a knife and threatened the security guard before fleeing with the stolen merchandise.

Police located the young person a short distance away, and officers attempted to arrest him. Police say during the arrest, the suspect spit on the arresting officer and punched the officer in the face.

A second officer was kicked in the chest twice and in the arm once as officers were securing the youth in the police vehicle.

The RCMP says none of the officers were seriously injured during the incident, and the knife and stolen property, Old Spice cologne, were recovered during the arrest.

The 17-year-old now faces numerous charges of assaulting a police officer, robbery with a weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The RCMP says the youth was held in custody pending a court appearance.
