N.W.T students help divert over 6,000 phone directories from landfills

Yellowknife, NWT – Fewer phone directories will end up in northern dumps thanks to a recycling initiative.

Schools from across the North helped divert outdated phone directories from local landfills as part of the Northwestel Directory Recycling Program.

Wanda Leaf is with Leaf Solutions, who coordinate the initiative on behalf of Northwestel.

She says many people may not use directories anymore, but they should still be recycled properly.

“They’re printed phone directories because a lot of people still want them. Northwestel has a corporate responsibility to recycle them so this is a program they came up with some 13 years ago and they continue to do it each year with the schools.”

Leaf says ten schools from across the territory and Iqaluit collected more than 6,000 directories.

She says Range Lake North School gathered more than any other school and were rewarded with an additional $200 for it.

Leaf says other collection efforts didn’t go unnoticed though.

Over $7,000 was awarded to schools across the territory which they can put towards field trips, school supplies and extra-curricular activities.
