“They have been hit really hard”: Hay River Mayor Jameson speaks on small business after five week evacuation

After being evacuated for five weeks, thousands of Hay River residents have returned home by road and charter flights. 

In a press conference, Hay River Mayor Kandis Jameson addressed the return home, and what life after the evacuation looks like as the community prepares for winter. 

According to Jameson, small businesses have been hit the hardest as a result of five weeks with no business.

“They [businesses] have been hit really hard, and Hay River has always been… we thrive on small businesses, it’s what drives us,” Jameson tells MyTrueNorthNow. 

“I challenge everybody to shop locally for Christmas and help these guys out,” she adds. 

Additionally, the mayor says she will be lobbying the territorial and federal government to look for additional support for Hay River small business.
