Yellowknife Reminds Residents to Watch for Children Heading to School

Schools in Yellowknife are now back in operation, and the City is reminding residents to keep an eye out for students as they are making their way back to class.

Municipal Enforcement Officers will be present around school zones, conducting enforcement operations, and working to ensure school safety. 30 km/h speed limits in school zones in Yellowknife are in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and speeding fines are doubled. Drivers should exercise caution in school zones including watching for pedestrians, obeying speed limits and not driving distracted. If residents have any traffic safety or school zone complaints, they are asked to call MED at (867) 920-2737.

Drivers are reminded that passing a school bus when red lights are flashing is illegal. Drivers in both directions must stop and wait for the children.

For those who are walking their kids to school, practice road safety and remind them to do the same. Only cross at crosswalks, stop signs or stoplights, and look both ways before crossing the street. Kids who will be riding bikes to school are reminded that helmets are mandatory for anyone under 18.
