Yellowknife RCMP to patrol school zones and bus routes as kids return to the classroom tomorrow

The 2023/24 school year is set to resume for Yellowknife students on Thursday, September 14, and as a result, the Yellowknife RCMP is gearing up to begin patrol operations in the coming days.

According to the RCMP, roadways in the city will be busier with students walking and riding bikes to school, and drivers are reminded to slow down and pay attention to any young scholars on the road.

Officers from the RCMP and the City Municipal Enforcement Division, will be patrolling school zones and bus routes.

Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones and obey school bus traffic controls. Remember, drivers travelling in both directions must stop when a school bus flashes red lights as students can board buses from either side of the street.

Additionally, police are asking parents to take advantage of the opportunity to discuss road safety with their kids.

Pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert when crossing the street, use crosswalks when possible and always obey walk lights. “Unplugging” by leaving phones and electronics in backpacks is also encouraged for students crossing the street to focus on the road.
