Protections hold despite fire growth in South Slave, Hay River council to review conditions for re-entry

Due to significant fire activity over the weekend, the re-entry process for the Town of Hay River has not yet been implemented.

Birch Creek saw significant growth with 35 to 40 km/h winds from the west; however, despite the fire’s growth, defenses in place along the west side of Hay River and the West Point First Nation as well as Riverwoods held overnight.

Slower wind activity from the west may allow for a controlled ignition operation near the Birch Creek area. Officials say the exercise will generate “a lot of smoke,” but crews remain ready if structural protection systems are required.

After re-entry plans were delayed last night, council says they will continue to review the conditions for the region with the intent of an update by 8:00 pm this evening.
