Severe wind event expected to elevate fire danger in the South Slave over the next 48 hours

The long awaited severe wind event forecasted to kick off September is expected to come today in the South Slave.

Yesterday, crews took several precautions to ensure the safety of the Town of Hay River during the next 48 hours.

Structural firefighters devised a plan to push back against the blaze should it encroach on the town. Additional airtankers and helicopters will be dispatched immediately as visibility allows.

NWT Fire says any non-fire crew personnel are subject to extreme levels of danger, especially during the next 48 hours.

Fire crews are currently running sprinklers in at-risk areas and will continue to run them throughout the day today.
