Low visibility continues to restrict fire crews in South Slave, thunderstorm risk causes concerns

Visibility concerns continue to plague the South Slave as crews work to establish protection lines around Hay River.

According to officials, only one flight was able to take off along with 45 minutes of helicopter bucketing. Crews add that the smoke was so thick, it restricted the movement of trucks and equipment on the ground.

Visibility is low again today but may improve in the afternoon. The risk of thunderstorms is ongoing for crews, bringing unstable weather to the region and elevating fire risk.

New structural protection crews are on scene, and the suppression line near kilometre marker 553 is being elevated and brought closer to homes for increased protection.

The Town of Hay River says after Saturday conditions should improve, allowing crews to work proactively instead of reactively in their fire containment efforts.
