Favourable winds expected today, smoke continues to create problems for aircraft: Hay River wildfire

Wildfires continue to ravage the South Slave despite progress made in the north.

The wildfire in Hay River remains out of control and remains 1 km from the airport and 1.5 km from the town centre. The blaze was last mapped at 417,359 hectares burned.

Near-record temperatures are forecasted again today with variable winds expected in the morning, shifting to winds from the northeast throughout the burning period today. NWT Fire says these winds are favourable as they will push the fire back on itself.

Smoke continues to be a top concern for aircraft takeoff and landing; however, officials say they will continue to look for the opportunity to put tankers in the sky.

No new losses have been reported overnight and defense of Delancey Estates has been held.
