NWT General Election delayed to November 14, writs to be issued mid-October

After a recommendation by the Chief Electoral Officer of the Northwest Territories, that the upcoming territorial election be delayed due to disruptions related to wildfires, the Legislative Assembly met in Inuvik to pass legislation to delay the election until November 14, 2023.

The six-week delay will affect all related election dates and writs will be issued on Monday, October 16, officially opening the nomination period at 10:00 am that morning, and extending it to the following Friday.

According to officials, the pre-election spending period will also shift by six weeks, beginning July 16th instead of June 4th.

The Chief Electoral Officer does not have the authority to extend the pre-election period to encompass the entire period of June 4th to October 15th, therefore any money spent between June 4th and July 16th will not be considered pre-election spending and is not eligible for reimbursement.

Additionally, any money spent between June 4th and July 16th is not counted towards the $30,000 spending limit.
