NWT evacuees warned about “Canada Relief Fund” scam: RCMP

Scammers are trying to make fire evacuees lives even more difficult; according to the NWT RCMP.

Mounties are issuing a warning for residents of a text message-based scam circulating NWT cellphones targeting those affected by wildfires.

The RCMP says they have received concerns regarding messages that claim to be from the Canada Revenue Agency and reference a ‘Canada Relief Fund.’

“These messages are not from a legitimate source, and residents are encouraged not to click on the link or provide any personal information in response to these messages,” the RCMP says.

Clicking on these links can potentially expose an individual to malicious software that may compromise personal information.

Evacuees are reminded that all benefits related to wildfire evacuation relief or support requires an application. If you have not applied for financial support from a legitimate agency, any unsolicited messages promoting financial supports should be treated as a scam.

Information regarding legitimate financial support can be found through the GNWT, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can provide information about past and active scams affecting Canadians.
