Direct attack begins in Yellowknife wildfire, controlled burns considered: NWT Fire

The wildfire outside Yellowknife remains out of control and was last measured at 167,082 hectares burned.

According to NWT Fire, northerly winds are expected today, gusting up to 30-35km/h, with warming temperatures throughout the day, causing greater fire activity away from the city.

Following the announcement from Fire Information Officer Mike Westwick, direct attack is beginning on the perimeter of the fire, and small scale controlled burn operations are being considered to burn off fuel that may cause the flames to creep closer to the city.

Crews say they are now evaluating the amount of work it would take to bring the fire to a mop-up stage and eliminate the fire’s threat to the capital.

Officials add they are continuing to prioritize the ever-growing 10km+ control line to the west of Yellowknife.
