Residents waiting for evacuation flights asked to return Friday as capacity reached on first day

Residents in Yellowknife and across the region will have to return to line-up for a seat on an evacuation flight, this after the planes slated for Thursday reached capacity, and saw delays thanks to weather conditions in the capital.

The Government of the Northwest Territories released a statement on social media around 5 p.m. Thursday, saying that between 200-400 that were currently in line at Sir John Franklin High School to register for a flight out of the NWT would be the last in the sky today.

“We understand that this is deeply frustrating for those who have been in line for several hours and who will need to line up again tomorrow,” the post read.

“Many individuals with mobility issues and who are immunocompromised or have a condition that puts them at higher risk of severe outcomes due to smoke were moved up in line, and we would like to thank everyone for their cooperation in making this happen.”

Those who will have to return to line up for a spot are being encouraged to do so early, with registration reopening at 6 a.m. at Sir John Franklin High School. The GNWT says they developing an “extensive flight schedule” for Friday and Saturday, with the first flight scheduled to depart on Friday at 8 a.m.
