Sheltering in place is available as a last resort for residents who are unable to evacuate by road or by air.
If residents do not have a place in Yellowknife to stay, they are welcome at the Multiplex and shelter there.
According to officials, the Multiplex remains the evacuation hub for residents staying in place as it is metal and relatively fireproof.
According to the GNWT, the shelter will have food resources available; however, residents are asked to bring non-perishable food items for themselves and their families.
Pets are not permitted at the Multiplex, but space is available for residents who are sheltering in place with pets can camp at the Old Town Parking Lot and Rotary Park.
Friday August 18th,
21 evacuation flights have been scheduled to depart from Yellowknife to Calgary with nearly 2,000 seats available for residents.
Depending on turnaround of flights and need, additional flights may be organized for Saturday, August 19.
Flights are scheduled once an hour every hour from 7:00am to 11:00am with flights every half hour from 8:30am to 11:00am.
In the afternoon, flights are scheduled once an hour every hour from 12:30pm to 7:00pm shifting to every half hour and some double flights at 3:00 and 4:00pm.
Following the evacuation order issued for the City of Yellowknife due to fires, the GNWT has released a few details regarding where evacuees from the City are meant to go.
As of the morning of August 17, Highway 3 remains open for residents and evacuees who are able are being asked to travel by road and arrange for their own accommodations
Evacuees travelling by road who require support and accommodations in Alberta can receive help as of noon on August 17, in Valleyview Memorial Hall: 4808 50th Street, Valleyview, Alberta, Fox Creek Hall: 200 1st Street, Fox Creek, Alberta, and G.H. Dawe Community Centre: 6175 67 St, Red Deer, Alberta.
Additionally, the GNWT says work to identify more support communities for Yellowknife evacuees are being identified and information regarding these locations will be shared as it becomes available.
Evacuees travelling by air to Alberta will be directed to the City of Calgary.
GNWT supports are not available to Yellowknife evacuees outside of these locations.
Flights to Calgary are scheduled to depart from YZF at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 7:00pm, 8:00pm, and 8:30pm.
According to the GNWT, only residents who do not have the option to leave the city by road are asked to register for evacuation flights.
Residents who are immunocompromised or have a condition that puts them at higher risk of severe outcomes are encouraged to register for flights as soon as possible due to intense smoke in the region.
Residents wanting to leave the city by plane must register at Sir John Franklin High School where passengers will be shuttled. Residents are asked not to go directly to the airport.
Bag size is limited to standard carry-on, and passengers are asked to bring no more than 5 days of clothing, and other essentials alongside snacks and a water bottle.
Pets are permitted on all flights as long as they are crated, leashed, or harnessed and kept close at all times.
