MLA: NWT needs more detailed records of superbug infections in northern hospitals

Yellowknife, NWT – The MLA for Range Lake says northerners deserve to know how clean their hospitals are.

Daryl Dolynny says he’s concerned the territory isn’t keeping detailed records of patients who contract secondary superbug infections in N.W.T hospitals.

Dolynny says the issue has caught the attention of healthcare providers across the country.

“National standards is one in 12 patients who stay in a hospital develop a superbug infection and some of the statistics that we’re getting here don’t match national standards and in fact in a lot of cases we don’t even keep detailed records so this is very concerning.”

Dolynny says he was unimpressed with a report that was tabled in the Legislative Assembly, where members sat until last Thursday, that highlighted the transmission of superbug infections in northern hospitals.

He says in some cases there were no detailed reports at all.

Dolynny says he doesn’t want patients to go into a hospital with one illness only to leave with another.
