As wildfire season continues to tear through the territory, telecommunications company Northwestel has issued a statement regarding an outage in the Beaufort Delta.
According to Northwestel, there is no internet flowing over the Mackenzie Valley Fibre Line past Fort Good Hope, slowing services in Inuvik, Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik, and Tuktoyaktuk.
“Due to an active wildfire, we have not been able to inspect the fibre line, and we don’t have a time frame for when full service will be restored,” Northwestel says.
Northwestel says internet and cellular services are still working due to broadband capacity on a microwave radio network; however, service is extremely congested.
In response to the outage, Northwestel is crediting customers 50% of their value of service bills during the interruption and the company continues to work with OneWeb to install Low Earth Orbit terminals to provide better capacity in the region.
