Following an investigation related to a fireworks incident in Fort Smith on July 31, 2023, two adult males have been charged with Forest Protection Act violations.
According to the RCMP, three days later on August 2, Fort Smith RCMP received numerous reports about fireworks being set off once again in the community.
Officers quickly attended and report the seizure of a still-smoking metal box from which the fireworks were set off.
The RCMP has not laid any charges related to the second incident; however, the RCMP are encouraging the public to come forward with any information about who may be responsible for the incident.
“Given the unprecedented risk of forest fires currently threatening numerous communities, including Fort Smith, this careless action could have had devastating consequences for the community and its residents,” the RCMP says.
According to the Forest Protection Act, a violation can be punished with a fine, or prison sentence of up to two years in jail.
