UPDATED: NWT RCMP charge 19-year-old Darren Nulliayuk with murder after 35-year-old killed in Yellowknife assault

UPDATE: The NWT RCMP have formally charged 19-year-old, Darren Nulliayuk with one count of murder. Nulliayuk recieved the upgraded charge the afternoon of July 31 and remains in custody pending future court appearances.

Following an assault complaint in the parking lot of Capital Suites on Franklin Avenue on July 22nd, 2023, the RCMP Major Crimes Unit has launched an investigation. 

According to police, RCMP attended a complaint of an assault around 7:15pm on Franklin, officers located a male suffering serious injuries and quickly transported him to hospital where he was later airlifted to Edmonton.

Officers promptly arrested a 19-year-old man from Nunavut who was charged with aggravated assault, common assault, and uttering threats. 

The 35-year-old male victim also from Nunavut has since died in hospital, leading the Major Crime Unit to take over the investigation. 

The RCMP says the charges against the 19-year-old will be re-evaluated, based on the available evidence and the results of the investigation, and may be upgraded. According to police, the suspect remains custody.
