City of Yellowknife updates emergency preparedness measures

The City of Yellowknife has updated its Evacuation Plan as a result of emergency preparedness measures being taken by the City during the Behchokǫ̀ wildfire.

The City is stressing this is NOT an indication of a worsening situation in Yellowknife and Yellowknife is not under threat as of July 26, 2023.

“Emergency preparedness is a priority for the City,” Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty says. “Yellowknife is not under threat at this time, but this document is available for public knowledge and is an expansion to our public emergency plan,” Alty adds.

The summary outlines two different types of evacuations that may happen in Yellowknife, each with their own instructions and information about what a wildfire evacuation may look like.

A tactical evacuation would be required if a threat needed to be actioned immediately and allows for little preparation and may be issued without formal documentation.

strategic evacuation would be required if a large scale incident threatens significant portions of the community, requiring a State of Local Emergency declaration.
